Medical Psychology learns the psychological aspects of the physician and patient behavior. It examines the manifestations of mental illness, mental role in their occurrence, course of the disease, treatment and health strengthening.

Relations of psychology and medicine are so close that psychologists, who work in this field, need to have medical knowledge. However, doctors in clinics are aware of the need of psychological knowledge for successful clinical work. Thus, clinical psychology is an area of scientific knowledge and practics, whics isequally owned by both medicine and psychology. In development of Medical Psychology efforts of psychologists, physiologists and doctors are combined. Relevance of Medical Psychology and Medicine is determinedby  basicmedical thesis that doctor should not treat the disease, butthe patient. Medical psychology has separated from Applied psychology as its branch only in the XX century. An important contribution to development of medical psychology made Z. Freud, E. Kretschmer, V. Bekhterev, S.S. Korsakov, G.I. Rossolimo. Doctors became the first practical psychologists in medicine. Z. Freud, E. Kretschmer, H. Rorschach, V.M. Bekhterev, P.B. Gannushkina and other medical psychologists began their scientific work as a neurologists or psychiatrists.

The practical work of psychologists in medicine was focused primarily on development and application of psychological diagnostics and psychotherapy methods. The main methods of medical and psychological study of patients were clinical interview and experimental psychological study of mentally ill people. Hermann Rorschach (1884-1922) developed the technique of projective psychodiagnostics.

The main methods of psychotherapy were: suggestive, psychogogic and psychoanalytic (Kretschmer, 1998). Suggestive techniques were used during sleep or hypnosis. Psychogogic methods meant everything connected with education, work therapy and exercise. At the beginning of XX century the new direction of medical psychology - psychoanalysis - was created by Freud. This method arose from the experience of treating hysterical states and concerned the clinic neuroses, psychological analysis of neurotic symptoms and their therapy. There were famous psychotherapists and medical psychologists among Freuds students and followers. Subsequently, some of them created their own directions in psychotherapy and psychology. The most famous his followers are  K.G. Jung and A. Adler.

Emergence of laboratories of experimental psychology was very important for the development of medical psychology. Such laboratories took place in clinical neuropsychiatric institutions. Since 1890 under the leadership of P. Jean was established the laboratory in the largest psychiatric hospital in Salpetriyer, France. Practical work in psychiatry and study of mental life were the main focus of its activity. At the same time he was an excellent organizer, who helped the development of clinical psychology in Ukraine.

In the 30's and 40's several important works on experimental psychological studies of speech and thought were published (L.S. Vygotsky, A.G. Ivanov-Smolensky, M.S. Lebedinsky, etc.), emotional and volitional sphere (A.R. Luria), studies of influence the performance ratio of neuropsychiatric patients on their work (V.N. Myasishchev etc.) and some other sections of medical psychology.
