20 March 2019 12:37

On March 20, the Institute was visited by representatives of the Government Mission of Canada. The implementation of electoral reform, election observation, the issues of gender equality and inclusive governance in Ukraine were discussed on the meeting with students.

Chrystia Freeland, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Marie-Claude Bibo, Minister for International Development, made the following statement:

"Canada provides strong support to Ukraine and has allocated nearly 24 million Canadian dollars to implement electoral reform, election observation, gender equality and inclusive governance in Ukraine.

In early February, CANADEM officially launched a Canadian mission and 50 observers began their work in Ukraine on a long-term basis. Canadians will observe all aspects of the electoral process before the presidential election in Ukraine, during and after the elections, in particular, monitoring the participation of women, internally displaced persons and minorities in the electoral process. In the future, short-term Canadian observers will join them.

Canada also allocates 2.8 million dollars for initiatives aimed at counteracting the negative impact of misinformation on elections in Ukraine.

Canada stands for democracy all over the world. Election observation missions make a key contribution to the consolidation of democracy. We will continue to support the implementation of reforms in Ukraine, including the organization of the conference "Reforms in Ukraine" in Canada in the summer.
