07 September 2019 09:52

On September 4, a literary roundtable dedicated to the 34th anniversary of the death of poet and dissident Vasil Stus was held at Khmelnytsky Institute.

The event began with an introductory speech of the director of Institute of Bilyi L. G. He encouraged students to love their homeland, to be loyal to its people.

Freshmen of Khmelnitsky Economic and Law College of IAPM recounted the poet's biography and recited his poems. Then the audience watched short films about the poet's life and creative path.

A dissident Kuzma Ivanovych Matviyuk, an eyewitness who was in the prisoner camp with Stus, visited the event. He told about Vasil Semenovych, a fighter for the independence of Ukraine in the XX century, an outstanding Ukrainian poet, translator, prose writer, thinker, literary critic, human rights activist. The speech was very interesting, with examples of what Kuzma Ivanovych experienced in the camp.

Kuzma Matviyuk is a human rights activist, a well-known public figure. For his participation in the national revival movement of the sixties, he was imprisoned in the Soviet camps of Mordovia (1972–1976). After his release, he and his family were persecuted for almost ten years (1976–1985).

Also Kuzma Matviyuk is one of the founders of the People's Movement of Ukraine in the Khmelnytsky region. In 1993, he created the regional organization of the All-Ukrainian Society of Political Prisoners and Repressed and led it until 1999. Kuzma Ivanovych is Professor Emeritus of the International Personnel Academy and Honorary Citizen of Khmelnytsky.

The director of IAPM Khmelnitsky Economic and Law College, Parandi V. A., made a closing statement and thanked everyone for their productive work.
