New research in Springer: UAV systems and dangerous area mapping by IAPM Associate Professor Yevheniia Znakovska
A research paper co-authored by Yevheniia Znakovska, Associate Professor at the Interregional Academy of Personnel Management (IAPM), has been published in an international Springer academic publication. The study focuses on the use of unmanned aerial vehicles as multifunctional sensor systems for obtaining meteorological information and mapping potentially dangerous areas for flight operations in urban environments.
The publication “UAV as a Sensor for Information Obtaining and Mapping Dangerous Areas for Drone-Based Operations in Urban Environment” appears in Sensors, Devices and Systems. Proceedings of SDaS 2025, Volume 2, part of the Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering series published by Springer Nature Switzerland and indexed in Scopus. The research was co-authored by Yuliya Averyanova and Yevheniia Znakovska. The paper was published online on July 2, 2026, and occupies pages 274–283.
UAV Systems as a Source of Meteorological Information
The study focuses on the potential of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to serve not only their primary flight missions but also as airborne sensing platforms.
The authors examine the application of UAVs in the context of the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), aerial mobility and the smart city concept. The use of UAVs as mobile sensor platforms can complement ground-based information collection networks and expand the possibilities for monitoring urban environments.
One of the key objectives of the research was to take into account meteorological factors that may affect the safety and operational efficiency of unmanned aerial vehicles.
Mapping Dangerous Areas in Urban Environments
The study proposes an algorithm that uses UAVs to obtain weather-related data and identify areas that may be potentially dangerous for flight operations.
The proposed approach takes into account seasonal and daily variations in weather conditions in urban environments. The information obtained can be used to identify areas where weather factors may create additional risks for UAV operations.
The researchers also focus on the possibility of combining meteorological monitoring with other functions of an unmanned aerial vehicle. This approach makes it possible to consider UAVs as multifunctional technological systems that can simultaneously perform their primary mission and collect information required to assess flight conditions.
Modelling Results and UAV Operational Safety
To evaluate the proposed approach, the authors conducted modelling that demonstrated the algorithm’s potential for identifying weather-related risks in urban environments.
The research results indicate the potential of the proposed approach to improve the efficiency and sustainability of UAV missions by reducing risks associated with weather conditions.
The study therefore brings together issues related to unmanned flight safety, meteorological monitoring, digital technologies and the development of intelligent urban infrastructure. The findings may contribute to further improvements in decision-support systems for UAV operations.
The Publication and IAPM’s Sustainable Development Goals
The research is connected with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) considered by IAPM in its research and educational activities.
The study is primarily aligned with Goal 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities. The research addresses the use of unmanned technologies, IoT and monitoring systems in urban environments. Identifying potentially dangerous areas and obtaining meteorological information can contribute to technological solutions aimed at safer and more efficient urban infrastructure.
Another important area is Goal 13 - Climate Action. The use of meteorological data, monitoring of weather conditions, and consideration of their seasonal and daily variations provide an information basis for decision-making in the context of changing environmental conditions.
The connection with the Sustainable Development Goals highlights the practical focus of the research, in which digital and unmanned technologies are considered in the context of urban safety, environmental monitoring and the sustainable use of modern technological solutions.
The publication by Yevheniia Znakovska in a Scopus-indexed Springer publication represents a contribution to IAPM’s research in the areas of unmanned systems, digital monitoring and decision-support technologies. The study demonstrates how contemporary engineering solutions can be applied to current challenges related to sustainable urban development and responses to changes in the environment.
