At the Khmelnytsky Institute of IAPM, teachers of the Department of Economics, Management and Tourism held a series of master classes on the occasion of the International Water Day, dedicated to self-disinfection of water in war conditions. This initiative was a response to the acute problem faced by millions of Ukrainians due to Russian aggression - limited access to clean drinking water.

According to UNICEF, about 6 million Ukrainians have serious difficulties accessing drinking water due to damage to the water supply infrastructure. In total, about 13.6 million people lack water for sanitation and hygiene. This forces people to use water from alternative sources, such as wells, rivers, and tanks, which may not always provide adequate quality.

During the masterclasses, the teachers talked about five simple but effective methods of disinfecting water at home:

  1. Boiling is the easiest and most reliable way to disinfect water, which can destroy most pathogens.
  2. Active chlorine tablets are a compact and convenient solution for water treatment, especially in the field.
  3. Iodine is a method that effectively disinfects water, although it should be used with caution and in limited quantities.
  4. Potassium permanganate is a product that provides disinfection at the correct dosage, but requires care in use.
  5. Activated carbon is a natural filter that helps remove organic contaminants and improve the taste of water.

The workshops at the Khmelnytsky Institute of IAPM were distinguished by a high level of practical training. Participants not only listened to the theoretical part, but also had the opportunity to try out water disinfection methods on their own under the guidance of experienced teachers. Such events are aimed at ensuring that each participant is able to protect themselves and their loved ones in case of need for self-purification of water in conditions of limited access to safe sources.

The event organisers stressed that water is not just a resource, but the basis of our health and life. That is why learning how to disinfect water is extremely important for every Ukrainian. Such workshops raise public awareness of water purification methods and provide the skills necessary to protect health in difficult conditions.
